summer2016Front

Does the so-called Montezuma Treasure exist? When a team of archeologists set out to document a little-known cliff dwelling on the sprawling Navajo Indian Reservation in Northern Arizona, the last thing they expected to find was clues to what happened to the fabulous treasure that the Aztec spirited away from the approaching Spanish invasion. But they were not the first to make this discovery, and now the race was on to recover the gold and silver artifacts before they are lost forever.

From the Editor: A brief jaunt back in time to when the Aztecs met Cortez begins this contemporary tale of treasure hunting, murder & intrigue.

More About Roy—

Roy Voss retired from a career of designing and building high-pressure pipelines. The work took him to five continents and once, in a thirty-day period, resulted in two trips around the world—one going east and the other west. What was once an obsession with golf has morphed into a love of writing. In addition to the self-published novel, PAYBACK, Roy has completed six other unpublished novels based on incidents from those travels. He now lives with his wife, Bobbi, in a country home just outside of Palestine, Texas.

Mark Enlow shares his thoughts on writing inspiration…

Mark Enlow, author of The Unexpected in Little CAB Press’s Spring Anthology A TIME TO BLOSSOM shares his thoughts on writing inspiration!

SpringBookCoverImage

What’s inspirational writing? Can you catch it? Keep it?

Maybe… Better write it down!

ecosystem-life-notebooks

Ah! Inspired writing comes from outside yourself and from within your inner domain. Life’s experiences shower onto paper in the form of word raindrops that must be brushed into a picture.

Stephen King and Dean Koontz are just a couple of authors who inspire my imagination! Wait… I just had an idea for a story I must share with everyone! Better write it down! I hope later—all will enjoy reading it and come with me on a short vacation to a different realm. After all, this is why I write—to share those small escapes to a different world with others.

Now… where did I put that notebook? Uh oh…

Celebrating Author Gail Kittleson!

Gail Kittleson is an author on the move! Her contribution of “The Shepherd” in Little CAB Press’s Christmas Story Collection was the kind of story which brings a lump in your throat and a tear to your eye!
Volume1BookCoverImage
We loved working with Gail on our Christmas Collection and recently, we caught up with Gail to see what she’s been up to since Christmas and found she’s published another novel- In Times Like These! Congratulations to Gail!
Intimeslikethesecover
What Gail has to say about the publication of her new novel:
It’s fun that my latest novel released in spring, just as Iowa’s frigid April gave way to a more pleasant May. For several weeks, my husband and I watched a little cardinal couple in our back yard await their hatchlings in our back yard. And then all of a sudden, three little mouths searched for sustenance.
A day or so later, actually on our thirty-eighth wedding anniversary, my first boxes of books arrived. LIke a birth in many ways–my heroine, a World War II young Iowa farm wife, awaits peace in her home like the mama cardinal looked forward to her baby chicks.
But with her husband’s fury at the draft board’s rejection and his natural sullen nature, finding that peace may take longer than World War II. The letters she receives from London see her through a bitter cold winter, and when her father-in-law dies, her mother-in-law emerges from grief with a taste for joy. Addie’s down the road neighbor Jane shares her pithy philosophy of life along with flower starts for Addie’s garden, and every day brings new blossoms to cheer her.
Many women face a long, uphill climb to find their voices, believe in themselves, and claim their God-given place in this world. I’m so glad to send Addie out to readers–may you enjoy her love of life, cheer her on in her challenges, and resonate to her growth in understanding and faith.
A little about In Times Like These:
Pearl Harbor attacked! The United States is at war.
But Addie fights her own battles on the Iowa home front. Her controlling husband Harold vents his rage on her when his father’s stoke prevents him from joining the military. He degrades Addie, ridicules her productive victory garden, and even labels her childlessness as God’s punishment.
When he manipulates his way into a military unit bound for Normandy, Addie learns that her best friend Kate’s pilot husband has died on a mission, leaving her stranded in London in desperate straits.
Will Addie find a way to help Kate, and courage to trust God with her future?
An excerpt from In Times Like These:
The lamb, pink-nosed and healthy looking, snuggled into the crook of his arm. Not far away lay a motionless wooly gray mound—the mother. Addie bit her top lip. This loss would trouble Harold, but at least he saved the orphan.
Sleep mellowed the harsh lines of his face. In this quiet moment, he seemed like a little boy, and Addie imagined away the years.
“Oh, Harold . . . this is who you really are.” On a crossbeam, a barn swallow’s forked tail flicked in its cup-shaped mud nest.
“You’re as headstrong as Orville and as tight-lipped as Berthea, but I know you’re hurting for Joe, somewhere out there in the Pacific.”
A bitter draught razed the dusky alleyway, stirring the tight scent of oats in feeding troughs, a tinge of blood and water from the birthing, and the warm, acrid aroma of fresh manure. So far, the cold restrained the dead ewe’s rancid smell, but by morning, the stench would permeate the building. Harold shifted against the bale and snored, so Addie set the thermos near him and backed away.
“He might not hold me like he does that lamb, but he’s consumed by the war. He can’t think of anything else but Joe going down on the Arizona.” Her bulky chore coat caught on a splinter, so she wrestled it loose. “In time, he’s bound to change. Doesn’t love believe the best and never give up?”
Her whisper bounced back at her. She wanted to help him to bed, but knew better. No, until the old Harold returned, she’d bide her time and practice her own kind of loyalty.
Purchase In Times Like These-
A little about Gail:
Gail Kittleson taught college expository writing and ESL. She now writes women’s fiction and facilitates writing workshops and women’s retreats. She and her husband enjoy family in northern Iowa, and the Arizona Ponderosa forest in winter.
WhiteFire Publishing released Gail’s memoir, Catching Up With Daylight, in 2013, and her debut women’s historical fiction, In This Together (Wild Rose Press/Vintage Imprint) released in 2015. She also contributed to the Little Cab Press 2015 Christmas Anthology,
The first novel of her World War II series released recently (In Times Like These), and Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas will release the sequel in February, 2017. You can count on Gail’s heroines to make do with what life hands them, and to overcome great odds.

Celebrating Author Kaine Thompson!

Kaine Thompson is one on-the-go author who has recently published her story “Loose Threads” in Little CAB Press’s 2016 Spring Anthology A TIME TO BLOSSOM.

SpringBookCoverImage

We are grateful to Kaine for her contribution to our latest anthology and we’re delighted to work with her! When asked what inspires Kaine, this is what she told us:

Women inspire me. I find their lives compelling. Their words and stories are full of wisdom—like this one:

Ellen is one of the several elderly ladies who joins me daily in the pool for water aerobics. She is ninety-seven. Whenever I don’t feel like putting on my swimsuit and going to the pool, I think of Ellen. She never fails to show up and give her best. I asked her once what makes her come every day and she said, “I don’t think about it. It’s what I do.”

This gem of sagacity inspires me. Perhaps because I was once a reporter and tend to ask leading questions, but I am often amazed at how much information women will share with me. The secret is listening to them with genuine interest. They like to share their life stories, complete with self-reflection, heartache, and humor.

One day at a busy coffee shop an elderly woman asked if she could share my table. I commented on her accent. She told me she grew up in Germany during World War II. I asked a simple question and struck gold. “What was that like?”

She told me the German army had occupied her village. They confiscated all the food and livestock, leaving the villagers to scavenge as best they could. Her mother kept her close out of fear of the soldiers. The villagers faced starvation and some were shot while defending their homes. They were not Jews. They were Protestant Germans. They were casualties of war. I had never heard this perspective before.

I call these snippets of women’s lives my gems. I hoard them in my journal to use in the future. I am continually inspired by the stories women tell, what they value, what they are willing to share. I write them down. I don’t think about it. It is what I do.

Kaine is the author of:

Remember Her For This: A Study on the Women in the Gospels (Amazon, July 2016 release)
Superstition Murder Club (Amazon, 2015)
I Remember Nobody (Smashwords, 2013)
The Living Stones (Smashwords, 2012)

Now the ex-soldier must accompany Cruz to the sacred and secret burial sites of the old Hualapai Chiefs to make sure they are unmolested. What they didn’t expect was to stumble onto a kidnapping plot that they feel compelled to interrupt.
THE OBIT By Roy Voss
The result of a strange dream that I had that cause me to awaken laughing. It is a story told in the first person about a man finding the obituary of his friend and then reliving a conversation with her. This young woman was born with a defective heart and instead of dying as a child, she lived a full life into her late twenties. She details the reasons for changing her name from Lisa Harmon to Stupid B. Everbodily. Just when I think she could be correct, my wife intervenes and returns my thinking to reality. The strangeness of this story is taken almost word for word from the dream. Perhaps I need medication.
THE UNEXPECTED By Mark Enlow

A LESSON IN TIME By Anne Marie Kensington

KEEP ON KEEPING ON! By Marchelle Perry
Marchelle Perry AKA Marcy married Rad Perry on May 15, 1962.  We were blessed with 4 healthy, active sons.  I was Den Leader in Cub Scouts for 12 years, by default, Rad was Pack Chairman.  We took pride in and spent time with our boys.  We were the youth leaders for the junior and senior high groups at St. Peter Lutheran Church.  We attended their games and band concerts.  To have one of those beautiful souls stolen from us because of stupidity was almost more than we could bear.  How did we manage to stick together?
GOD, MY HONDA & MY SEAT BELT SAVED MY LIFE By Carol Farris
